Johnson Gilbert, an Indian born and brought up in Kuwait, settled in Kerala in 1989. After a successful career as a party DJ (Disc Jockey) and music shop owner in Kochi, he returned to his hometown in Alleppey and converted his home into one of the pioneer, premier Alleppey homestays. “The Nest” as it was then called was soon listed in International guidebooks and is now well established among the top Kerala home stays.
Johnson understood that the main reason tourists visit Alleppey/ Alappuzha is for the backwaters, and that quite a few tourists also arrive for a beach stay. Alleppey is blessed with a wonderful array of lakes, lagoons, canals etc, interspersed with rice plantations and quaint villages that make up the backwaters. Thee backwaters of Alleppey are now world renowned as the no. 1 tourist attraction in India, and indeed in the world. Also, tourists prefer to see and experience the backwaters of Alleppey via an overnight cruise on a houseboat / Kettuvallom / rice barge. Thus, Johnson entered into a partnership and now runs a very successful house boat business, www.ecohouseboat.com
A chance meeting with an old acquaintance led to the discovery of the Secret beach. This quiet beach, and the guesthouse near there, promoted by himself, soon became almost as popular as Johnson’s homestay (as his guesthouse is now known). It provided another reason for his tourists to spend more time in Alleppey. You can contact Johnson for help in organizing an all Kerala tour. With his score+ years in the tourism business he has developed contacts in other homestays across Kerala.
Since the last 10 years,Johnson conducts a special event for his guests to watch the Kerala snake boat race. It’s getting bigger every year. www.alleppeysnakeboatrace.com
